About Shonali

Shonali Srivastava is an Indian-born American tabla player, percussionist and music educator. She grew up in Lucknow in a family of musicians. Her father, Girja Shanker Srivastava, was a flautist, and she began appearing on stage at about three years old.

She is a disciple of Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and Pandit Birju Maharaj, and works in the Lucknow gharana of tabla.

She moved to the United States in 1997. In California she founded Shonali's Academy of Music & Arts and has continued to perform and teach in the Bay Area.

Approved artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan. The first woman approved by AIR to perform naal.
